Resumes

Good meeting today. I want to see what you all come up with for your resumes. Theres one thing regarding resumes that I didn't get to mention today. If you have a gmail account you already have access to this service. Just go to pages.google.com. It's like a browser-based web design program, and it's easy to use and distribute if you don't happen to have a hard copy on you.

Here's a link to my online resume, just in case you're curious what I'm talking about.

FCC stuff:

Some one last time asked for info related to women of color, and I found this article about media ownership by minorities.

1. http://www.stopbigmedia.com/blog/

Some statistics for media ownership among minorities.

  • Women comprise 51 percent of the entire U.S. population, but own only 4.97 percent of all TV stations.
  • Minorities make up 33 percent of the entire U.S. population, but own only 3.26 percent of all stations.
  • While the level of female and minority ownership has advanced in other industries since the late 1990s, it has worsened in the broadcast sector.
  • Hispanic- or Latino-owned stations reach just 21.8 percent of the Latino TV households in the United States.
  • 91 percent of African-American TV households are not reached by a black-owned TV station.
  • Markets with minority owners are significantly less concentrated than markets without them - even if the size of the market is held constant.

There are two FCC commissioners who have stood up to make changes.

FCC Commissioner Michael Copps:

“There is something terribly wrong when women and minorities comprise such substantial parts of the U.S. population but own so few broadcast television stations. This isn’t just a problem. It’s a national disgrace. We just should not be voting again on changing media ownership rules unless and until we have tackled this problem and come up with initiatives to redress a crying national need.”

FCC Commissioner Jonathan Adelstein:

“A bad situation has gotten worse while the FCC sat idly by and did nothing. We have a legal and moral obligation to take immediate steps to make broadcast media and coverage more diverse. This study shows that allowing more media concentration will only aggravate what is already a pitiful lack of minority voices over the airwaves.”

2. http://amandacongdon.com/roadblog/2006/09/20/josh-wolf-behind-bars-again/

Josh Wolf is a video blogger who was arrested for refusing to turn in footage he filmed at a G8 summit. The footage contained protestors and the FBI wanted it. He spent just over a month in jail, and now he’s out on bail. He might end up going back because he still refuses to hand over his tapes.

CSB stuff:

We will give out 5 points if you also show your festival submissions to us. We might, if we have enough, devote a meeting to showing them, and any other class work you guys want to share.

CSB Notes for 9/20/06

FCC stuff:

A study to determine the effects of conglomeration in 2004. Michael Powell stopped the study, which didn’t just mean had it put on the back burner, they literally destroyed the partially completed study. The debate has since been reopened, and the FCC has scheduled a public hearing on the matter in Los Angeles on Oct. 3.

In a recent auction hosted by the FCC, T-Mobile won a large chunk of the 1700MHz and 2100Mhz band, which is used 3G data communications. T-Mobile grabbed up 120 bids covering 474 million people, which means they have multiple spectrums covering the super-urban areas, where coverage is spottier thanks to more obstructions They spent over 4.1 billion dollars on the winning bids.

CSB stuff:

What kind of information do you guys want?

Are you all interested in a sort of database for our skills? If so you all need to give us some information about yourselves.

I want to offer points to enter the farnold competition. I don’t see any reason why the winner of this contest shouldn’t be a student in the BECA department. I want to hear your ideas.

Announcements. The whole point of this club is networking. I want to make it possible for any one of you to give me information you think should be included our announced at meetings. Also, if you come talk to me in advance and you have a really extraordinary project, I will try to make a few moments for you to make your own announcements if you like.

Thanks,
Justin
