CSB Notes for 11/8/06

CSB notes, 11/8/06

Internships:

I heard about a great, paid, no-credit internship at link.tv, a local satellite channel. There’s a catch, they’re looking for someone who speaks fluent Korean. The show’s called Global Positioning, and they need some help.

If interested please send an email resume and cover letter to:

FCC Stuff:

AT&T/Bellsouth

The vote has been delayed yet again, as FCC commissioners attempt to avoid a 2-2 deadlock. AT&T has apparently promised to have broadband set up for every house in every state it serves by sometime in 2007 in exchange for the lucrative deal, a move that has several house democrats endorsing it. Given the precedents established before, I think it’d be better to keep asking for more, like a permanent commitment to net neutrality. It’s obvious that AT&T will beg, borrow and steal to make this merger happen, and soon.

The FCC has endorsed the development of BPL. In other words it may soon be possible to plug a device into a wall socket, and connect to the internet via the power lines. There is a big debate about whether or not this is a good idea. Basically the technology sends radio waves over power lines, and the interference can cause a lot of problems. Here’s an article about the FCC proceedings.

Here’s a link to a FAQ which has just about everything you could ever want to know about the technical details of BPL, and just what the debate is all about.

CSB Stuff:

Anybody want to work with me on my experimental film project in 740 this year? We need a lot of people, talent and crew. It should be a pretty fun project. We’ll have a rehearsal on November 27th, and shoot most of it on Monday December 4th. Come talk to me after the meeting if you’re interested.
