So things are going well in LA. I have a bunch of news and exclusive new internship opportunities, so read on.

We just got back from the Alumni mixer. Rubbed elbows with a lot of former BECA grads, topics ranged from digital media to screen writing to post-production services, etc. The trip has been a whirlwind so far, we've been to Disney, saw a taping of the Show-biz show with guest Quentin Tarantino! I was like, dude. Today we also went to HBO and MTV and had sit down meetings with some of their producers and stuff. We got to see the HBO office today, that building is amazing. They took us to their screening room and gave us swag like real VIPs. Crazy. Also, tomorrow we're going to Warner Bros. and Real Time with Bill Maher.

Needless to say this has been really fun, if a little hectic, and I would recommend this to any member who is getting ready to graduate.

Internships/jobs

This week I have some very special opportunities for you. These first ones are coming direct from the source, and they want people.

The next one is a project I worked on last fall. It's a videopodcast/talkshow called the Heather Gold Show.

Nationally-touring performer and nubile, young talk show seek intellectually curious, funny reliable people for good times. More fun than an Oval Office internship.
Three completely cool intern positions with flexible hours.

1. Promotions/editor

Duties: write funny, catchy copy without any BS. Promote the show online. Let bloggers and vloggers know about relevant fun bits of interest. Participate in the conversation. Requirements: highly web and social media-savvy. Location: Anywhere.

2. Project/production manager

Duties: Read the full description. Requirements: meticulous, organized person (you would laminate all your files if you could). Location: San Francisco.

3. Video assistant

Duties: view, log, organize, possibly edit video. Make editorial selections. Requirements: extremely organized and detail oriented (a beautiful sock drawer) and familiar with Final Cut Pro (an agile trackball hand). Location: San Francisco.

Compensation

Small stipend, credit, learning the live and filmed entertainment ropes. Excellent networking and recommendations when deserved and needed. Bonuses available for position (1)

The other thing I want to tell you all about is the new CSU media interns program. This is basically a way to apply for multiple internships at once. First you apply to their program. You need to have a 3.0 GPA and be in good standing with SFSU. Once you get accepted to the program, they will send your information out to the internships you choose. I also have a few things Camacho sent for me to tell you about. The first is a survey about MP3 players.

The next one is an internship with the Panetta Institute. It would take place in Washington DC in either the legislative or executive branch. All housing, transportation and board would be fully covered. There's a catch: only one student from SFSU can get this internship. Sound interesting? Internships and more

Hey everybody. Springtobefest went well I thought, sorry for being slow! I wish I had more of a chance to kick it with you guys, but I got sucked into working behind the bar. Let's get down to business.

Jobs/Internships:

This first one is for you radio kids: The BAYLISS RADIO INTERNSHIP PROGRAM is still looking for interns to fill some slots in the Bay Area. I do not believe they require credit, and you can get paid $8-$10 hr. They are purposely looking for BECA students for these positions.

This next one is great for people who want to work with kids. There's two positions available, one as a production intern and one as a communications intern. It's 15-20 hours a week, unpaid, and they are willing to give credit or not depending on your need. BECAFEST is coming up and we're encouraging all of you to participate. It's simple, just bring in a DVD or a CD to the CAGE and drop it off with this entry form. Submissions are due April 23rd by 4 PM. Anything you've made this year is eligible. What the hell are you waiting for? While you're at it, bring in a copy for CSB to see and we'll give you points.

FCC:

As you know I'm a big proponent of Network Neutrality. I found a really in depth article about the subject. This one is particularly good because it sums up not only the FCC's deliberations on the matter, but also information about the congressional rulings and where it stands these days. There is argument that the FCC does not have the right to regulate privately owned lines. The congress is responsible for deciding exactly what the FCC is responsible to regulate, so if they can pass legislation to this effect the debate on whether the FCC has the right to protect Internet users will be over. Unless you'd like to see major telecoms and media conglomerates controlling the Internet the way they control TV and Radio, people need to fight to keep in the way it is now. The next one I found is a blog about the local radio scene. I have some experience with KZSC, where I got my start in broadcasting way back in 2000. Although I'm more into TV now, it's kind of interesting to see what's going on in the radio business from time to time, and these guys are insiders. It has all kinds of details about the inner-workings and people behind the scenes of a great deal of local stations. Worth taking a look if you're into radio in the bay area.

CSB notes 3/21/07

First of all: There is no member meeting this week! Come to Elixer at 16th & Guerrero in the Mission at 9 on Wednesday for Springtoberfest! Sorry it's taken me a little while to get this info up, I've been super busy.

Big news on campus: We got our graduation funding! It’s official!

The strike vote passed overwhelmingly and our campus was the one with the highest positive vote of any CSU campus, probably because the cost if living is so high here. The strike is going to be sometime in April. I’ll keep you posted. There's rumors that an agreement might be reached, so it's still sort of up in the air.

Also, Abtin won his election, so say congratulations if you see him. He's going to be around next year, and I'm sure he'll be pulling for us.

FCC:

I found an article about HDTV and what it’s all about. For those of you who don’t know, it has been mandated that on Feb 17^th 2009 all television will have to be broadcast in the HD format. This is a transitional time for the medium, much like the advent of color back in the old days. People are upset about it, but it’s the way o the future and all of you should know about it. The next article I found is about the idea of sending out broadband internet over the airwaves in so-called ‘white spaces’ between channels 2 and 51 in the regular spectrum. Microsoft and Google have both submitted devices for testing to FCC which could utilize this space. They call it Wi-Fi on steroids, and as always, the fight over our limited spectrum is being fought between giants, when in reality it’s owned by you and me. Anyway, this could become a big story soon:

Here’s a little update on the Sirius-XM merger. Critics had been saying that the FCC might treat this like the merger between two major satellite television companies, DirecTV and Dish, which was not accepted. The FCC is arguing that in that it would have made the choices to limited to consumers. But this isn’t the case with satellite radio. What? Their reasoning is something like this: thanks to AM, FM, CDs, iPods, DVDs, etc, people have more than a few choices when it comes to choosing what to listen to in their cars. So this means they might let this merger happen. I think this would be a bad thing, but here’s the article in case you want to learn more:

The FCC has given their blessing to HD radio, meaning that now stations don't need special permission to begin to broadcast in the new format. This means that the same bandwidth can now hold about five times as many radio stations, which is going to mean more choice for consumers. You can read about it here:

Now for a quick update on the Google/Viacom lawsuit: Google is confident that Youtube has done nothing wrong, Viacom says that their copyrighted clips have been viewed over 1.5 billion times. Here’s a great break down of the details:

This is election week on campus, so I want to use my tiny amount of influence and ensure that you realize who is on our side in this campaign.
First off: my committee member Abtin Forghani (PSU) is running. You should definitely vote for him.
Also, John Bergman (SF) and Hector Jimenez (PSU) helped us with the graduation fund and they deserve our support. So don't forget to vote today and tomorrow from 9:00 am to 9:00 PM in student center in front of book store or cafe Rosso.

FCC:

This week I'm going to be focusing on Viacom's recent litigation against Google. The cable/movie/video store/network etc. etc. megaconglomerate wants a billion dollars from Google, who says that now that they have bought Youtube they are suddenly responsible for millions of other people's decision to post copyrighted Viacom content. Ever since Clinton singed the DMCA in the late nineties, these kinds of battles have been raging over digital rights management. At the time a little software company called Napster was held responsible for the activities of users it's peer-to-peer file sharing protocol. But Google is no Napster, and while that tiny company could be pushed around by the Music Industry, Google is ready to push back. On legal grounds, since Youtube has mainly been a forum for original content, they are much less at risk than Napster was. They also have a policy of removing copyrighted materials as soon as they are made aware of them, something Napster didn't do. These two factors make this lawsuit pretty spurious, but I'm sure Viacom figured it would be worth the trouble for a cool billion.

Another interesting wrinkle is that as late as August last year, Viacom and Google were planning to work together on a new ad targeting program. Google's adsense has made them a fortune, and it's no secret that they would like to take the same idea and apply it to television and radio. What could make two giant companies that were ready to do business with each other 6 months ago into enemies? For some info on their previous dealings, check here:

FCC:

There’s been a recent payola settlement between the FCC, CBS, Clear Channel, Entercom and Citadel. The agreement would pay 12.5 million to the FCC. There’s also a settlement that s supposed to allow more independent music to be played on these stations between 6am and midnight. It seems like this could be a good thing for radio. Although these networks admit no wrongdoing, there's got to be a reason that they agreed to make all of these concessions.

Kevin Martin is asking for a la carte cable television. The idea is this: instead of buying a cable package which includes asset of basic channels and special upgrade packages, you would be able to choose specific channels that you want, and pay only for those. The cable industry is not happy about this, and it seems like it might be a pipe dream. Either that, or there's something fishy going on and someone is looking for a quid pro quo. Martin has also started asking questions regarding the testimony of satellite radio executives to congress. It looks like the merger might not be as good for consumers as it would be for the two companies involved. What a surprise.

I’m actually glad to see Kevin Martin doing his job for a change and putting the welfare of American consumers over those of the corporations. Let’s hope this signals a real change, not just a whole lot of lip service. This might have something to do with vocal protests from consumer watchdog groups. Lot's of Stuff

Hey everybody. Sorry for the delay. Computer has been screwy.

CrushTV is a network and content website for college students, and they are looking for people. Basically if you have work you’d like to show, they want to show it for you on TV or the internet. They claim that this is a fairly high profile Student Producer position: contact them here.

There’s going to be an inter-genre discussion on creativity, sponsored by the Creative Writing Wordsmith’s Guild. It’s going to be next Tuesday March 6^th in Hum 512. They’re looking for people of all backgrounds to talk about writing and creativity and stuff. There’s going to be a Belgian documentary filmmaker Rogier van Eck giving a talk as well. Might be cool.

FCC:

The FCC has just broke their record for the biggest fine ever given. A fine of 24 Million will be handed out to Univision for failing to show the required three hours a week of educational programming for children. They had been saying that soap operas qualified as educational programming, and they have no comment on the fine. The previous largest fine was 9 million to qwest communications international.

Any of you use skype? It’s a voip service, and they just recently began to petition the FCC to allow the wireless carrier to be allowed to be activated on any phone. I think this would be a great thing.

Yes, that was my laptop frying last week. The hard drive failed and they’re mailing me a new one, but I did lose my notes for last week. It breaks my heart that the episode got cut off in the middle. For those of you who want to see my show in it's entirety, check out our MySpace. We're working on a new one as we speak, hopefully I can show it in the meeting when we're done.

I just ordered some free business cards for the LA trip and Vegas from Vistaprint.com. The first 250 are free after shipping, it’s a pretty good deal.

I have an announcement for Marta our webmaster: she needs some talent for a shoot. There’s a male speaking role, and one female dance role with no lines. She also needs two or three extras, and a bartender. Applicants need to be available March 21^st between 1-4pm for filming. Contact Marta ASAP if you’re interested.

Finally I remember I had found a cool page that had a bunch of streaming TV sites. I've looked around, but I can't find it again. I found this one, which is pretty cool though.

Happy valentines day! Last night was lots of fun. How is everybody?

Internships: Did anyone contact SpotDJ? Do so. I’m applying for an internship this summer that you guys should think about. It’s pretty competitive, but we have also had some other kids in the school do it with good results.

The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Foundation is now accepting applications for the Summer 2007 Internships.
Television Academy Foundation internships are designed to give qualified full-time students (undergraduate and graduate) pursuing degrees at colleges and universities in the United States in-depth exposure to professional television production, techniques and practices.

FCC:

I have found some interesting stuff for you this week. The first one involves the redefinition of what “broadband” actually is. The definition that the FCC uses come from 1996 and set the level at 200 Kbps. This, as you probably realize, is way outdated. A standard wireless router can do 50 Mbps, which is way faster. The FCC is talking about changing these rules, which will have a big effect on the industry. One of the things that telecoms have to do to maintain their favored positions with the FCC is say that they are increasing the number of people with broadband. If broadband is redefined, then they will have a lot of work to do to catch up, which is good for consumers. America is way behind other places in the world when it comes to broadband. The next thing I want to talk about is that the FCC is having another public hearing on media ownership. This time it will take place in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on Friday February 23^rd, 2007. This is yet another turning point in the debate, and its something you should all know about.

Back to School

Hey everyone, welcome back. Our first meeting was a big success. Apparently we signed up over forty new members! That's phenomenal and we could still get more next week. Sorry if the meeting was a little slow and administrative, we had a lot of stuff to go over.
I really want to stress the need for new committee members. We have a great team already, but we can always use more help. Plus, it will give you a chance to become officers next year. Even though it's been a lot of work, I'm really glad I decided to do it.
Make sure you keep track of your points. It's all in the BECA bible.
What else?

About the FCC, as some of you may know the FCC approved the Bellsouth AT&T merger. Now there’s only AT&T. This means that despite being broken up into a bunch of different companies back in the day, AT&T has reconglomerated (is that a word?) And is bigger than ever. Now they’re not just phones either, they also own a ton of DSL lines and all of Cingular. The republican controlled FCC is taking some heat over the issue from the newly democratic house. I’m sure you guys have all heard about the Aqua Teen Hunger Force ads that caused so much havoc in Boston last week, even though they were used in a bunch of other American cities and no one even noticed. Apparently Turner has agreed to compensate the city for the money that was spent shutting the city down while they were removed. Negotiations are still going, but the price might go into the seven figure range. Someone last night was saying as much as two million. That's a lot of money.

Kevin at SpotDJ is looking for part-time people, and this could be a good opportunity for you radio kids because it can out you in direct contact with bands. They were on TV right before Christmas: Video.
Here's some of Kevin's description:

We are looking for students to contact and interview bands as well as edit the interviews.

The primary roles and responsibilities are:
Contacting and interviewing bands
- Contact band management and/or publicist to set up an interview with the band.
- Interview the band over the phone or local artists in our office, recording the conversation to MP3.
- Edit interviews into clips for use on SpotDJ. These clips will be heard while people listen to music through iTunes as well as on the SpotDJ website and other websites.

Marketing and promotions
- Create an artist account and post the audio spots online
- Coordinate with the band and/or their manager to add a badge to the artist site
- Promote SpotDJ online, including improving and promoting SpotDJ's MySpace page and maintaining a presence on other online music-related communities and blogs
- Assist at Noise Pop and other music events handing out post cards or other marketing material promoting bands

Employees are expected to come into the office most of the time, although there will be times when working from home/school will be fine as well.

Hey everyone. I'm done with school!
This has easily been the hardest semester of my life, but I wouldn't have had it any other way.
All of you are great, and I'm really glad I decided to take this position. I couldn't be happier with CSB, and I think so far this year has been a huge success.
I have all of you to thank for coming to meetings and listening to me rant about the FCC or whatever else. Look me up around New Years if any of you want to hang out, I'm going to try to freelance over break, but I should have plenty of time.
For those of you who helped out with my experimental film, I'll post a link to youtube as soon as it's up there.

Wow, it sure took me a long time to get around to this. Sorry about that.

Here's some updates on what's been going on with the AT&T/Bellsouth Merger:

Still waiting for the FCC to rule on the AT&T BellSouth Merger. We will find out on December 13^th whether they plan to vote on the matter this year, or push it until next year. AT&T is still unwilling to endorse network neutrality, and if I was an FCC chair I’d wait for that before I let them recreate the giant communications monopoly that the FCC broke apart in 1984.

AT&T Bellsouth is still up in the air. The most recent news is that the republican appointee who had recused himself, since he had recently worked for an organization that opposed the deal. This is a tricky position for McDowell, since his former economic interests are not congruent with the deregulatory ideals that his party endorses. He says he supports the decision they made to allow MCI/Verizon and SBC/AT&T in the past. The question here is what action he will take to get us out of this stalemate.

The verdict is in: McDowell will be allowed to vote on the merger.

Now for the FCC's new indecency rules and the ensuing battle there:

Thes articles are about the networks fighting against the FCC’s new indecency rules, which they say are too broad and constitute a violation of the first amendment. NBC, CBS and FOX are fighting, but not ABC. These new profanity rules were passed last March. Since the introduction of the v-chip, they say that these new rules are unnecessarily restrictive.

Some unions have joined in the fight against the FCC’s new indecency rules. These include: the Screen Actors Guild, the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, the Writers Guild of America East, the American Civil Liberties Union, various public radio groups and the Brennan Center for Justice.

The FCC has countered their arguements, saying that the statutes are not going to come up before the court. This is a set back.

FCC Stuff:

AT&T/Bellsouth

The vote has been delayed yet again, as FCC commissioners attempt to avoid a 2-2 deadlock. AT&T has apparently promised to have broadband set up for every house in every state it serves by sometime in 2007 in exchange for the lucrative deal, a move that has several house democrats endorsing it. Given the precedents established before, I think it’d be better to keep asking for more, like a permanent commitment to net neutrality. It’s obvious that AT&T will beg, borrow and steal to make this merger happen, and soon.

The FCC has endorsed the development of BPL. In other words it may soon be possible to plug a device into a wall socket, and connect to the internet via the power lines. There is a big debate about whether or not this is a good idea. Basically the technology sends radio waves over power lines, and the interference can cause a lot of problems. Internships:

I haven’t heard about any new internships this week. Have any of you applied to the ones I found? Is there some way I can help you guys get involved with these? I know it can be a little intimidating, but I think any of you seniors out there should try to set one up for your final semester, and there’s no better time than now.

FCC Stuff:

Interesting developments in the AT&T/Bellsouth debacle:

Basically, don’t hold your breath for network neutrality. People are asking for it, but critics say that this matter needs to be brought before the congress, not hastily decided in reference to this one tiny, little merger.
This is nonsense, especially when you consider that the matter has come before the house before, and was stalled into stagnation before it ever reached the floor for a vote. This merger would be a great place to start.
Another interesting fact is that Republican Robert McDowell, who used work for a group that was a competitor to AT&T and Bellsouth, is recusing himself, leaving the FCC with only 4 commissioners, and hence an even two way split.

The FCC will close it’s public forum on November 3^rd, so there’s still time to make your voice heard before the debate goes behind closed doors.

This ia an interesting article about cross-ownership and real world examples of waivers and how they have affected it. It seems that a company that owns more than its allotted amount of stations or newspapers can simply prove their case to the FCC and ignore regulations.

If you interested in the College Television Awards, the deadline is January 15th. Remember, one entry per student, less than an hour, less than thirty minutes for news or sports, have the instructors contact info, and have been done for course credit. It has to be a piece that you produced, obviously.
In other words, almost anything any of you have made in your production classes this semester. SFSU has largely ignored this contest in the past, there's no entry fee, and the grand prize is $2000.

Not too shabby.

Perhaps I spoke too soon last week when I said that AT&T had gotten the nod in their attempts to absorb Bellsouth. Turns out that the FCC is still thinking about it, and they may require more concessions.

It was pointed out to me that I should mention these, since I want to represent for the school and not my own personal interests. These include Drysquid, Arnold Anti-school and Unwise Things To Do.

Internships: No new internships this week. How many of you have actually looked into doing these? I know that these internships were a big selling point for most of you, and I want to know if any of you are using this info.
There is one thing, a project run by one of our new professors, Grace Provenzano:

We will be shooting on three days this month (two Wednesdays and
one Sunday).  The program is about the work of dance teacher Albirda Rose and
her dedication to helping youth in disadvantaged SF neighborhoods learn the art
of movement and music.

I'll be needing grips, camera and sound assistants and editors.

We’re getting the media binder underway, thanks to my committee members.

FCC Stuff: AT&T did indeed swallow Bellsouth during last weeks’ open meeting. They made a concession in the deal to follow network neutrality. Good right? Not so good, in fact, their agreement is only for the next 30 months, so in 2009 they will be able to start giving priority to their favorite customers online. This is not good. I Suck at Bowling

Hey everyone,

I've got some links to free stuff for you all.
I stumbled upon these while making my submission for farnold.com. Apparently people have been having a little difficulty uploading really large files directly so I had to do it the hard way with my eggdisk account and email them the link, but it should be up there soon for you all to see. It's called Governator 2. Vote for me if you like.

In making the commercial I had to search far and wide for public domain content that I could use, considering I didn't have any Arnold footage. I found this great explostion stock footage resource. They also have some good compositing demos to help you use their matierials.

After that I needed some music and sound effects, but for the contest I had to find them legally. I found this free/common licence sound effects page which some of you might find useful.

I want to see some of your submissions up there! You have until Oct 18th to get them in.

If you have a gmail account you already have access to this service. Just go to pages.google.com. It's like a browser-based web design program, and it's easy to use and distribute if you don't happen to have a hard copy on you.
